There’s nothing quite like handing out 60 sheets of music to an orchestra and hearing them nail it in the first take. Especially when you’re one of an audience of four, sat in the sweet spot of a recording hall with jaw-dropping acoustics.
We were asked by Fallon to create the scores for Škoda’s two-year sponsorship of ITV’s mystery drama programmes. They had developed five, humorous mini-films, directed by Gary Freedman. Each had to feel like scenes that had been cut from classic mystery films. So we set about composing bite-sized orchestral pieces, cramming as much action, suspense and drama into each 15 second spot as we could.
A month later AMV asked us to re-arrange ‘The Artist’ by Ludovic Bource to accompany their latest spot for Curry’s/ PC Wold – ‘We start with you’. The main film, Directed by Chris Cairns, features a stylised store containing thousands of products which are physically eliminated in an elegantly choreographed routine. We were briefed to synchronise the musical notes, with the movements in the picture.
We had to record a real orchestra to do both projects justice and decided to fly out to Bratislava twice in a matter of weeks to record at the incredible Slovensky Rozhlas (Slovak National Radio Building).
As well as being Bratislava’s answer to the Eiffel Tower, this upside down pyramid is home to the super-talented Bratislava Symphonic Orchestra. We recorded the Strings, Woodwind and Brass with conductor David Hernando Rico two ways: as a whole performance and as separate String / Wind / Brass passes to give us greater flexibility at the mixing stage. We also recorded drums and guitar at London’s Metropolis studios and piano at London’s Air Edel studios before bringing everything back to String and Tins HQ for the mother of all mix sessions.
Thanks to all the folks at the BSO, Metropolis, Air Edel and to Maya Manwaring, Gary Freedman, Chris Cairns and Miles Nathan for having us involved in these awesome projects!
