No Fixed Mix

No Fixed Mix is our home-grown initiative aimed at improving the gender balance in technical sound roles.

String and Tins are inviting applications for our fifth No Fixed Mix programme, aimed at encouraging women to consider a career in Sound Design.

The workshops will take place on weekday evenings between April and June at our studio in London. Details will be communicated to successful applicants during the week commencing 8th April 2024.

Our workshops aim to give attendees:

  • A snapshot of the audio-post industry (from our perspective)

  • Tips / tools / resources to get started

  • Follow up with a piece of work to help put a showreel together

We are delighted to be joined by this year’s guest speaker Hannah Webster, Sound Designer at UNIT for one of the workshops and Dolby will be holding their brilliant immersive audio tour at their flagship London studio for the second year running.

Thanks to the generous support of HHB Communications, Avid, NUGEN Audio, Native Instruments and Krotos, successful applicants will be provided with a free 12-month subscription licence to Avid Pro Tools Studio™, the industry standard DAW (worth £299), NUGEN’s Focus Bundle (worth £139), iZotope Music Production Suite 6 (£579) and one year subscription for Krotos Studio (worth £119.88) so that they can continue to develop their audio post-production skills.

To apply for a place please email [email protected] with a single page CV and a link to a single piece of sound work that you have created. This could be audio only sound design, a collage of interesting field recordings, sound design to picture, or a piece of music with unusual instrumentation. Links must be Soundcloud, YouTube or Vimeo. Submissions should be between 10 seconds and 1 min in duration. Applicants must be 18 years or older, as of 1st April 2024.

Closing date for applications is midnight Sunday 31st March 2024. We will reply to all applicants the week thereafter. Any questions? Feel free to email [email protected] and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
