SILENT LONDON APRIL 2020

A binaural study by Will Cohen

I took this series of recordings as a follow up to the ambiences I published in March around the time London was going into lockdown. You can find those recordings here. Please go back to listen to those first if you want to get a chronological perspective on the field recordings. I kept to the open air spots and away from any public contact by travelling between locations by skateboard. Again I used the binaural microphone technique - if you close your eyes and imagine, the physics behind this method of sound capture will immerse you in a 3D stereo environment pictured in the stills that I took on my journey.

The change between March this year to now is considerable: more calm, more birds, less prophecy, less vehicles. London has become more silent and yet I'm left with positivity from capturing this month. I look forward to documenting the same spots again in the future to hopefully capture humanity coming out of the woodwork once again. X
