Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Trailer
Read about how we Mike and Will brought the iconic Doctor Who theme into a more cinematic realm for the 50th anniversary.
The original Doctor Who theme is close to our hearts. From childhood
memories of it’s haunting synth solo coming out of the tv at
Christmas, to numerous Orbital festival performances of their cover
version – we love it. Basically, it’s the geekiest piece of music from
the last 50 years of broadcasting. So when Red Bee asked us to have a
go at writing the music for the 50th anniversary trailer it was a no
brainer.
We incorporated elements of Ron Grainer and Murray Gold’s memorable
compositions within our own work, lacing them within a more cinematic
style in keeping with the trailer format. It was produced at String
and Tins, with extra brass and strings recorded at the beautiful Dean
Street Studios supervised by Mike.
The sound design consists of echoes of previous doctors morphed with
our current hero Matt Smith, blended with a history of sound from
previous incarnations of the Doctor’s enemies. The final touches of
sfx were to help bring the vfx to life – see if you can pick out the
details on the passing jelly babies and echoing Daleks!
We produced the final mix at the lovely Soho Square Studios and
oversaw the cinema mix with Chris Turner at Jungle’s brand spankin’ new
cinema room.
Big thanks to the creative team Mina, Jason, Claire, Charlie and the director
Matt for working with us all – it was a great job to be involved in!
